(unpopular?) opinion: v. rory gilmore x boyfriend(s)

So, this is my first opinion post on a Gilmore girl topic: Rory Gilmore and her boyfriends. I am going to list my reasons as to why each person was good and bad for her, then state who I think her perfect (for her) man would have been (in my opinion).

Dean. I feel like Dean was a bad choice for Rory’s first boyfriend, because they made him seem too perfect at first, so of course every boyfriend after him would be compared to him.

He was good in a lot of ways: He was loyal. He understood the way Lorelai and Rory worked (refer to the episode where he explains to Max Medina how Rory and Lorelai operate. “Answer the pepperoni.”), he went to Rory’s dance with her when he didn’t want to, as well as her coming-out ball and her grandparent’s house. He didn’t get mad at her when she (Jess) crashed the car, etc.

However. He became very possessive and jealous when Jess came around. He got angry at her when she wanted to do more activities to increase her chance of getting into Harvard (Sure, she was going a little overboard but he could have at least understood her side of it and tried to calm her down, maybe help out or help her arrange a better schedule), he was constantly calling her, he practically stalked her before they actually met, he face-raped her in Doose’s Market, and to be honest, I don’t think they had anything in common and barely got to know each other before they started dating; I think the beginning of their relationship was based on looks. Rory thought he was cute, Dean thought she was cute and she liked the fact that a boy liked her. And OH MY GOD, SLEEPING WITH RORY WHILE MARRIED TO LINDSAY. I really believe Luke should have told Dean what he’d said to him the next day after his bachelor party. Lindsay was a poor substitute for Rory. I felt SO bad for her. I didn’t like her but she didn’t deserve to be treated the way she was. What Rory did was bad but she wasn’t the one that was married, Dean was. He should have known better.

Jess. I feel like Jess and Rory were great for each other on an intellectual level. Also, I think Rory needed some excitement in her life, which Jess provided. Face it, Rory lives a practically perfect life. She needed a bad boy, especially after dealing with a possessive boyfriend. They could talk about anything, like books and music, etc.

However. Jess had a lot of emotional problems to deal with. He got irrationally angry over very stupid things. He didn’t have his life together. He basically wandered through his life aimlessly, slacking off and never accomplishing anything. He brooded a lot. He was a little too unpredictable for Rory, who liked things planned. He didn’t treat her mother right, which should have been a big deal for Rory. He kept secrets from her (how he got the black eye) and always turned Rory into an emotional wreck.

Logan. I think it was cool for Rory to have a boyfriend who was sort of from her grandparents world, if that makes sense. She got to see how the other half lived without going through her controlling grandparents. He was normally a ladies man but proved that he actually liked her as more than just a f*ck-buddy when he said he wanted to be her boyfriend - on his own terms. Also, when he got jealous when Rory went to the party with Robert, that was cute. He brought adventure into Rory’s life. He was unpredictable but in a way that taught her how to have fun and not be so serious all the time. He always encouraged her to follow her dreams and was very devoted to her.

However. Logan also possessed the ability to turn Rory into a wreck (crying on the bathroom floor, “Why doesn’t he like me?”; her flipping out when he hooked up with other people WHILE THEY WERE ON A BREAK), he didn’t stop her from stealing a yacht, he basically left her life after she turned down his proposal, even though he supposedly loved her enough to want to marry her in the first place. He wouldn’t wait a while for her to go out and follow her dreams.

[and now, the what-could-have-beens]

Tristan. Tristan was also a typical high-school bad boy, but you could tell her really liked Rory by the way her pursued her (PJ Harvey tickets, his jealousy over Dean, the way he got upset when she said that their kiss meant nothing). I think Tristan could have been good for her. They’re both smart. Maybe she could have turned him around the way she turned Logan around. He could have taught her to have fun a little earlier on and then she could have had a bit of it out of her system by the time she met Logan and not have gotten into so much trouble.

However. I think Tristan was a little too bad, and he probably also would have gotten Rory into a lot of trouble. Maybe not directly but she probably would have gone off to save him from some stupid stunt and gotten herself into trouble in the process. Also, a leopard doesn’t change his spots, and he had a habit of going girl to girl to girl, and he probably would have broken her heart.

[and finally]

Marty. Marty was like a friend-version of Lorelai, what with their movie / food marathons and almost always being on the same page. They would have been adorable together, ADMIT IT.

However. I feel like he would have gotten too annoying what with her friendship with Logan and what with how charming and whatever Logan is, I think she might have ended up breaking Marty’s heart. Plus, I don’t like the way he let their friendship change and how he lied when she found out that he was dating Lucy.

[so in conclusion]

To be honest, I feel like Rory and Jess would have been perfect together, if she had given him a second chance when he’d come back and asked her to run away to New York with him. You could tell he had really grown up. Maybe they didn’t have to run away right that second, but I think Jess loved Rory enough that he would have waited for her to finish her education. He would have been a great voice of reason for her, like he was when he convinced her to go back to Yale. Sure, he didn’t make some great decisions the first time around, but no one is perfect. If she’d given  him a second chance, I think they would have been great for each other in the long run.

[so there you have it]

Those are all my opinions. Any opinions on my opinions?
